Redout

Blood to the head. Eyes on the gate.

The professional FPV racing league

Sixteen pilots. Eight rounds. A hundred and forty kilometres an hour through a gate the width of a doorway, in the dark, on a video feed that arrives a tenth of a second late. Real races, real gates, real crashes, real prize money.

A racing quad lifting off a dirt track inside the cloud of dust its own props have thrown up.

The sport

A racing quad weighs less than a bag of sugar and pulls more G than a fighter. The pilot sees what the quad sees, through goggles, from a camera the size of a coin. The course is twelve gates. The race is three laps through them, faster than anyone else, without touching anything.

Every gate carries a timing loop. The split you see is the split the pilot sees, in the goggles, a fifth of a second after it happened.

seconds

A race starts on a tone, not a flag. Five lights come on, one a second. A random hold. Lights out. The grid is off the line in a fifth of a second. Arm the gantry and find out where you would sit on it.

    Built
    to break

Five-inch props, a carbon plate under a millimetre thick, four motors at thirty thousand a minute and a battery that gives everything up in ninety seconds. A quad costs less than the goggles. That is the point. Every pilot rebuilds between heats, at a bench in the pit lane, with the crowd on the rail.

    Be at the rail

Doors at six. Qualifying at seven. The final under the lights at ten, with the pit lane open until they sweep the carbon off the floor.

A season pass is eight rounds of pit lane for less than six of them bought one at a time.
