Set the extent, the tolerance and the access, and this works out the field days, the office days and an indicative fee — then prints the arithmetic underneath so you can see which half is expensive. It is nearly always the office half.

That one sentence is worth more than a specification, because it usually shows that the cheapest survey will do — or that the one being asked for will not.

Enquiries are read by a surveyor, not a form inbox. If it is urgent, telephone the office instead — someone will pick up between seven and six.

Field and office days shown separately, against a named standard and a stated tolerance. Where a looser tolerance would do, both are quoted.

03 · Before we price a large job

A walk-over

Free, and worth it. Half the surveys that come in over budget were priced from a plan by someone who never stood on the site.
